In this illustrative report I will be Identifying two directors I have selected first Director is Tim Burton “ Edward Scissor hands “and his other film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” the second director and film I will be analysing is Ridley Scott “Thelma & Louise”. Also I will be identifying which are considered an auteur or Feminism theory covered in the lessons by studying their background and creative signature, and giving a wide range of examples from their work. When including filmography and any relevant background biography information and analysing the film techniques such as; the use of colours, lightning, special effects and editing techniques. I will be identifying any codes and conventions that use symbolism, technical elements, written and spoken language and besides what genre story and form they are.
The Director and Film I have chosen that would be considered
an Auteur Filmmaker is Tim Burton the director and Filmmaker of "Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory". Burton was born August the 25th 1958 he is an
American film director, producer, Artist, writer and animation. He is known for
his dark Gothic, Horror and fantasy films such as; Edward Scissor hands, Beetle
juice and corpse bride as there are many more examples of his movies. Burton
has often worked with the same Actors such as Johnny Deep and Helena Bonham
carter these Actors have appeared in many of his films. Tim Burton film is
about more than the story line, or even the characters, but about the overall
feeling it sends to its audience that it is identifiable.
He makes films true
to who he is which is that he is true auteur because in every possible sense,
he makes films his way. Tim Burton has used the same Actors as I have talked
about Johnny Deep and Helena Bonham Carter they appear in most movies together
such as; "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Alice through the looking glass"
They usually have the same roles in playing as the main characters. In the
movie Charlie and the Chocolate factory use of colour lightning there are
bright effects within the camera lighting such as the animation of the
Chocolate Factory. In the Film there is use of Music and Sounds in the movie
and it gives an effect. In the movie there is also a grey lightning throughout
because of the weather and atmosphere until they enter the Factory and it
becomes brighter and gives a positive atmosphere.
All colours mean something on an emotional level and they can help add new layers to your film. For example warm colours such as; red, yellow, or orange wake us up and get us moving cool colours these types of colours do appear within the Film when the characters go into the Factory.
This Film also includes codes and conventions such as
symbolism, technical elements, written and spoken language, and what kind of
form of convention is it (genre, story, form). The symbolic codes used are the
setting which creates atmosphere or frame of mind. Furthermore, I will be
developing more of my ideas about Tim Burton's second movie I have chosen where
he uses the same characters His movie "Edward Scissor hands “this released
26th of July 1991 it is an American romantic dark fantasy film. I will add two
links on the movies I have discussed so far to present the ideas and roles I
have talked on.
Moreover, the second Director I have chosen for my report is
Ridley Scott born the 30th of November 1937 an English film Director
and producer. Scott’s work has an atmospheric, highly concentrated visual style
he was also nominated for three academy awards for directing the movie
Thelma & Louise I will be discussing this movie and explaining in depth about
the Film the director Ridley Scott is considered an Feminism Filmmaker because
when creating the film Thelma and Louise he has presented a range of Film
techniques that I will discuss later on.
Thelma and Louise is and 1991 American road film directed by
Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri it starts Geena Davis as Thelma and
Susan Sarandon as Louise, two friends who embark on a road trip with
unforeseen consequences. The film became
a critical and commercial success receiving six academy award nominations and
winning for Best Originals screenplay where it also became a landmark of
feminist film the Film also demonstrates how women are taking for granted and
is portrayed in different ways. Thelma and Louise use a lot of Film techniques
such as colours and lightning special effects and lots of music and sounds.
Firstly, when being used in films colours are often used to
portray emotions and moods, the Film we can see that throughout there are warm
uplifting colours such as Orange, blue and green these colours present a
feeling for the audience because; it shows the relationship between both
best-friends however has a contrast to the beginning of the movie something
that is supposed to be a perfect holiday turns out horribly wrong and the use
of camera angling change with upfront face portraits.
These camera angling are
used when both Best- friends are in shock over the situation of the Rape scene
this has been filmed in different angles to show shock, disturbance and trauma.
In addition, the ending to Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise has become an enduring classic and a very brave choice faced with incarnation after going on the run, the film’s title characters drive off a cliff (“keep on going”) and into the grand canyon, falling to their deaths. Ridley Scott has always had a passion for Feminist Films and him directing and being the Filmmaker of Thelma and Louise has covered a range of political movements, ideologies and social movements that share a common goal which is to achieve social equality between sexes. For this reason he has decided to cast two young women who show how strong, dominant characteristics they have are opposites of what people would portray women to have. Both Directors I have chosen show why they are considered an Auteur and Feminism Filmmakers, because they demonstrate and justify how and why from the movies they make. Moreover i have applied and justified why i have selected the directors and a wide range of specific examples from their films.
In Ridley Scott's Movie there have been camera shot the amount of space that is seen in one shot or frame. Camera shots are used to demonstrate different aspects of a film's setting, characters and themes. As a result, camera shots are very important in shaping meaning in a film. Over the shoulder shots are also used which is over the actors shoulder in the foreground out of focus, this is taken place in a variety of scenes. Zoom shots are used as well they are extremely cool because if you get them in the right and successful blend them into your directorial style. Zooming was massively was out favour in the early 1990's and enjoyed a revival when Ridley Scott's career really took of in the early 90's with his film "Gladiators" and "Hannibal". Here are some images of scenes in Thelma & Louise where over the shoulder and zooming shots. These camera shoots are really good examples of Ridley Scott's great techniques.
Ridley Scott's style zoom shots are incredible cool, because you are able to see all camera techniques used and has made zoom effects look smooth and not to fast.
On the other hand, In Tim burton's movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory over shoulder shots are used and Crane shots these shots are used to achieve vertical translation motion. Whenever these shots are used you see the camera moving up or down by a few feet in the film there is also track in shots with a secondary foreground object. The significance of this foreground object is that it is closer to the camera than the main subject and it increases in size faster than the main subject as the camera moves in. This gives the shot enhanced three dimensional illusions, as with all foreground objects this shot works best with when the foreground object is being focused. I will now give the example of Charlie Chocolate Factory where the shoots are used .

This link shows how the movie was created and how the animations worked within each story line the video also indicates how much the camera shoots worked with each aspect.
Moreover, Tim Burton's other movie Edward Scissors hand also included a few more Camera shoots such as special effects, lightning and editing skills I will be including these examples in some pictures and a link with how the video was created and the behind scenes.

This link is the behind the scenes of Edward scissors hands keep explaining the camera shoots and ext.
In my conclusion, I have used all descriptions and justified my selected directors with using all the knowledge from classes. Also i have explained why they are considered and Auteur and Feminism Filmmakers with their backgrounds and creative signature with giving a wide range of examples.
